Kentucky couldn’t afford not to implement Obamacare. Kentucky figured this out. What’s stopping the rest of the US? My state could definitely use this kind of enlightenment.

coretta was better than mlk. remember that. remember that she coulda been like a beyoncè-yoyo ma hybrid if she didn’t join the revolution with her cheating husband. i wish that history books would really talk about her political work outside of her husband.

can we get the history books to talk about sexism in the civil rights movement in general? maybe just a little bit? like i need fannie lou hamer to be the center of any crm discussion.

Let’s talk about how the Civil Rights Movement was incepted by Black women seeking retribution and community consciousness about the rape and assault of Black women and girls. Rosa Parks was a typist and recorder for what would be the equivalent of a rape crisis center. The Civil Rights Movement was a women’s movement that shifted gears to garner attention b/c even in the scheme of racialized oppression; people cared more about Black men’s pain/suffering than that of Black women. All of this with the hopes that women’s rapes, assaults, kidnappings and lynchings would get attention by association/proximity to those of men.
READ THIS BOOK! CHANGED MY COMPLETE PERSPECTIVE OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AND REPRESENTATION OF RACIALIZED OPPRESSION.

"You guys know about vampires? … You know, vampires have no reflections in a mirror? There’s this idea that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. And what I’ve always thought isn’t that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. It’s that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves. And growing up, I felt like a monster in some ways. I didn’t see myself reflected at all. I was like, “Yo, is something wrong with me? That the whole society seems to think that people like me don’t exist? And part of what inspired me, was this deep desire that before I died, I would make a couple of mirrors. That I would make some mirrors so that kids like me might see themselves reflected back and might not feel so monstrous for it."

The spirits don’t get to tell me what to do anymore. I am done being pushed around by all of you. I did it because I wanted to.

Being a Black girl means having to second guess yourself when you want to speak up against dangerous Black male patriarchy because you know Black men are already viewed as violent and savage in the white supremacist social climate of the West.

Being a Black girl means being told you have to choose between your gender and your race—and not being able to explain why that’s impossible.

Being a Black girl means being told you’re simultaneously hypersexual and undesirable—and if you get assaulted, it’s because you were a ho.

Being a Black girl means being expected to explain all of this over and over and over, calmly and coolly and without blaming anyone or pointing any fingers or having the audacity to raise your voice—even though people will call you Angry(TM) regardless of your tone.

Being a Black girl means being silenced.

Fast food workers “occupying” Wall Street. #imlovinit

If you can’t fucking survive on fucking $7.25 go to fucking school and get another fucking job. Those people who run the fucking restaurants and shops who fucking give out minimum fucking wage need to make a fucking profit too. Get off your lazy fucking ass and make way for the fucking high school students and college students who fucking need that job that pays $7.25.

Here’s the thing about the minimum wage, when it was first instituted it was so that one person with one full time job should be able to support a family (of 4 I believe, sadly cannot find the source for this info right now, anyone know?). Since then, the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation and workers now are worse off than they were four decades ago.  In fact, if it HAD kept up with inflation, right now it would be around $10.74.
Furthermore, the idea that people working for minimum wage are teenagers is complete bullshit - in fact, it is more like adults over the age of 20.
Also the whole “go to school and get a better job” thing is top-notch advice obviously, but how exactly do you see the logistics of that working out? Take a person who’s barely surviving and probably already has two or more jobs… where EXACTLY are they going to find the time or money to “go to school and get a better job”? I mean really, explain this brilliant plan in detail please.
There’s this attitude like “oh, if you’re on minimum wage just get a second job! Or just go to school! stop whining!” as if people living in poverty don’t DESERVE small things like - spending time with their family! Sleeping! Doing anything BESIDES work!
Finally - this whole idea of look at these poor corporations “but they HAVE to make a profit!” Well, newsflash - they are. They’re making a huge profit. In 2012 alone, McDonald’s in fact made $5,503,100,000 in profits, so forgive me if I don’t feel too terribly bad for poor old McDonald’s, they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. And why is this idea so terribly controversial? That it’s IMPOSSIBLE for companies to make a profit without paying their workers as little as possible? Well, whoops in Australia workers get $15 per hour and the McDonald’s there are doing just fine.
P.S. if you wanna read a gigantic ass academic paper on why increasing the minimum wage is a thing that is good, here you go

Hey Ang, thing for you.
Also may I reiterate. In my City the unemployment rate is 8% FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES. Don’t fucking talk to me about college giving you a better job.

fun fact, when i left Vegas, the unemployment rating was TWENTY THREE PERCENT. A quarter of the fucking state, unable to secure a job. Go ahead and tell me to get an ADDITIONAL job. i fucking dare you.

I got a job at the Disney store in April of 2012. They trained us, gave us about 6 hours worth of shifts, then never called us in again. I last had a shift on May 4th 2012. I asked for more hours repeatedly and even participated in some store community service events to show I was dedicated. Nothing. I’m actually still on the books to this day, September 2nd 2013. I know this because I still get employee-only mail. (Btw, this was in California. I moved to Florida over a year ago. Still getting the mail.) There’s some sort of incentive program for big companies to train new employees for jobs and give them a token shift or two. That way they get tax credits or some shit for being “job creators” even though they really didn’t do squat. It actually costs the company money to fire you (they have to pay into unemployment), so they just wait for you to quit. That Disney Store bullshit disenchanted a previously lifelong Disney fanatic into no longer believing in the magic.
I worked my ass off my whole life trying to show the world how dedicated and hard working I am. I am tens of thousands of dollars in debt from student loans, not to mention that I’ve had to go through every penny of my life’s savings, including money that was supposed to go to surgeries I need that insurance companies won’t cover. I’ve spent more time in a day trying to get a job than employed people actually spend doing their jobs.
Bachelor’s degree with a double minor. Magna cum laude honors plus 3 honors societies. A butt load of extra curricular organizations, including leadership and even founder positions. Thousands and thousands of hours of volunteer work and unpaid internships, one such unpaid internship for as long as a year and a half full time. Top recommendations from all of my supervisors. Still unemployed. TGI Friday’s told me I didn’t have enough experience to seat people at tables. Marriott told me I was “unqualified” to be a hotel maid. I actually got to the point about 2 years ago where I started applying for medical experiments, but, shock shock, they said I didn’t qualify for any of them. They won’t even let me sell my blood or plasma because I have low iron. I’ve tried.
But please. Tell me how I’m just lazy and uneducated. Please.
